Glucose Revolution: Our Latest Recommended Read!

At Ellen Byron and Associates, as both Registered Dietitians and Certified Diabetes Educators, we understand the importance of blood glucose on our overall health and ability to thrive. Recently, we came across an amazing book, "Glucose Revolution: The life-changing power of balancing your blood sugar." Author Jessie Inchauspe holds degrees in Mathematics and Biochemistry and is well-known for her Instagram account @glucosegoddess. Her novel delves into the importance of not only what we eat, but how we eat it. Specifically, the order, combination, and grouping of our food to lower glucose spikes. The three main parts of the book discuss:

  1. What glucose is and what we mean when we talk about glucose spikes

  2. Why glucose spikes are harmful

  3. What we can do to avoid spikes while still eating the food we love

Inchauspe also provides readers with what she calls her "10 Hacks" for how to flatten our glucose curves. We want to keep blood sugars at a consistent level, as any sort of spike causes negative effects on our physical health, mood, and mental clarity, as well as our metabolic health. Some long-term effects of glucose spikes are Acne, Arthritis, Alzheimer's, Depression, Cancer, Gut Issues, Heart Disease, Infertility, Type 2 Diabetes, and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. Here are her 10 Hacks:

  1. Eat foods in the right order: fiber first, protein and fat second, starch and sugars last

  2. Add a green starter to every meal

  3. Stop Counting Calories

  4. Flatten your breakfast curve- Go savory

  5. Have any type of sugar you like - they're all the same

  6. Pick dessert over a sweet snack - eat sweets at the end of a meal

  7. Reach for vinegar before you eat

  8. After you eat, move

  9. If you have a snack, go savory

  10. Put some clothes on your carbs - add a fat or protein pairing

We loved this book and hope you will consider giving it a read or looking at @glucosegoddess on Instagram!
