Dr. Marcus Ranney: Article Review

We recently came across a great article by Dr. Marcus Ranney titled, “Sugar, Well Fructose Specifically, Kills. Here’s How Processed Foods and Carbs Can Harm Your Metabolic Health.” The article discusses what it means to be metabolically healthy. Metabolism encompasses all of the chemical processes that occur in the body and are essential to maintaining life. Dr. Ranney describes being metabolically healthy by emphasizing, “that your body responds to food in a beneficial manner, which reduces the risk of conditions such as stroke, kidney diseases, obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases.” As we have learned, many diseases and risks can be lowered through our diet, proving once again that food is medicine. Dr. Ranney acknowledges Dr. Robert Lustig’s recommendations to have your fasting insulin checked, as well as your HbA1c and Uric Acid analysis to indicate any poor metabolic health findings.

Dr. Ranney explains how the body becomes overwhelmed when faced with excessive carbohydrates. Glucose and all sugars are a form of carbohydrate, so when we consume this in excess, our body stores it as fat. This fat is what builds up viscerally around the vital organs and greatly impacts our risk of developing chronic disease. One way we can help our diet is consuming more fiber, to move our bowels and protect the lining of our intestines. Dr. Lustig has a great quote, “Fiber is the metabolic potion that converts poison back to food.” By limiting sugar and being mindful in our decisions surrounding whole foods eating, we can lower our risk of developing chronic diseases.
