Dr. Epel has just come out with new book that looks at the stress response and effects of chronically high stress levels. This book is a part of a series of "7 Days to More Joy and Ease" which includes looks at sleep and love as well.
In this book she explains the difference between stressful events and chronic stress. It is impossible and unnatural to get rid of all stress in your life, but lowering your baseline stress level is an important step in helping your health.
Chronic stress is a consistent sense of feeling pressured and overwhelmed over a long period of time and can lead to symptoms of aches, pains, insomnia, low energy, fuzzy or disjointed thinking, change in emotions, changes in appetite, or increased use of drugs or alcohol. Chronic stress can be caused by a number of things including major events or the stresses of everyday life.
In her book Dr. Epel explains that many of the common stress coping mechanisms are not actually very effective. In order to make the greatest impact on your health you have to lower your baseline of stress in life.
Here we emphasize the importance of overall health and nutrition. Stress plays a major role in diet and diet related diseases such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Dr. Ebel presents great ideas and research on how to lower stress to have a positive impact of diet and health!
