Kylie's Korner Supplement Spotlight: Turmeric
What is Turmeric?
Turmeric is an herb that comes from the ginger family and is used throughout India, Asia and Central America to add color and flavor to foods. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, found in the stem of the herb, and is used for its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effects. This nutrient plays an important role in fighting arthritis, inflammation, stomach issues and certain cancers.
How Much Turmeric?
For cases such as inflammation or digestive issues an appropriate dosage would be around 1.5 grams twice daily. Some great brands for supplements would be Root2 Turmeric Extract Curcumin C3 Complex, which has the highest amounts of curcumin. It is recommended to take two capsules daily (1,100 mg) for around 8 weeks. When cooking it is encouraged to use freshly ground turmeric due to it's high curcumin content. If that's not available McCormick ground turmeric is a great alternative.
How to use Turmeric?
Pairing your turmeric with certain foods such as black pepper can help increase the benefits of the curcumin. Consuming turmeric with black pepper keeps curcumin from being excreted from your body right away. Another way for turmeric to become absorbed is pairing it with a fat such as a nut butter, avocado, or fish.
How to add more turmeric to your diet?
Add some pepper and turmeric to scrambled eggs
Sprinkle these spices on sautéed or roasted vegetables
Use these spices for extra delicious flavor in soups
Add them to a salad or salad dressing
Turmeric is commonly added into mustards and a little pepper will spice it up!
Blend some turmeric into a smoothie
Add extra flavor to rice
Be creative!
