Kylie's Korner: Nutrition Myths Debunked #01
Gluten-Free Doesn't Always Mean Healthy
In the last few years a "gluten-free diet" has been all the craze in the media. Many people believe that a gluten-free diet will help you lose weight, become energized and generally feel healthier. This is not always the case. Dr. Daniel A. Leffler, director of clinical research at the Celiac Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston has a different take on the trend. “People who are sensitive to gluten may feel better, but a larger portion will derive no significant benefit from the practice" he says. Humans need fiber and not having these whole grains can be troublesome to the gut and bowels. Along with this many gluten free foods are highly processed, full of sugars, and fillers such as corn or rice. These can also create a huge issue for the gut microbiome. Eating whole foods such as oats, fruits and vegetables rather than processed foods will ultimately be the most beneficial to your health.
