Lets get bananas about bananas
Bananas are a superfood, that will reduce bloating, increase your energy, and help you lose weight! They also contain vitamin B9 (folate) which will help improve your mood! Because of this, bananas will help with stress and anxiety, which will also lead to a better nights sleep.
Bananas are also relatively inexpensive, but there's one problem; they ripen very quickly. There's nothing worse than biting into a banana and having it be squishy and brown...so how do we combat this?
In the March 2018 edition of Nutrition Action Healthletter, they give the tip of wrapping the stop stem of your bananas in plastic wrap, and it will prevent them from ripening as quickly. That's awesome! But why does this work?
The plastic wrap contains ethylene gas, and bananas produce this naturally as they ripen. With no plastic wrap, this naturally produced ethylene gas travels throughout the fruit and ripens it quickly.
When you wrap the stems, it traps this gas at the top of the banana so it can't ripen the rest of the fruit as quickly, which leaves you with fresher bananas for longer!
